Visit FileForums Granted, the development of those console versions has been anything but smooth, in fact the game was promised for PS4/Xbox One and it seems like they are just dropping that idea altogether.
The reception of Iron Harvest on consoles might lay foundations for the future of RTS on consoles. The game released on PC last year and the PS5/XSX versions are supposedly finally releasing at the end of this month so let's see how that goes. That being said, Iron Harvest was Kickstarted with the promise of console versions. If games like Company of Heroes 2, Dawn of War 3 or even Starcraft 2 had console versions, I could see more support for that argument. Grand strategy, turn based, commanding only very limited amount of units, these games are not in the same genre as Age of Empires. Same with the "other strategy games available to consoles" argument because the examples given are not really comparable to this specific subtype of RTS that Age of Empires belongs to. It would be nice of course to continue that tradition, but the landscape is so different and the game is coming pretty hot with even basic features missing. 15-20 years is a long time and that's how long it has been since those games, I don't think that argument has much relevance today.
